NY State Concealed Carry Firearm Safety Training Course
Arm yourself with the knowledge and experience needed to safely own, carry, and use a handgun correctly. This is the required class if you are looking to obtain a New York State Pistol License, a.k.a. NY pistol permit, for personal protection, hunting, and/or just to have fun at the range or in your backyard with a handgun in New York!
Special guest instructor Matthew Mallory from PS&Ed will be traveling to Rhode Island for this rare two (2)-day training opportunity right here at the Preserve Academy—saving you the trip to New York to attend this required class.
PS&Ed was the FIRST company in the state of New York to publicly release the new 18-hour training (New York State Concealed Carry Firearm Safety Training), the first to issue an 18-hour certificate to any NY resident, and PS&Ed is approved in more counties than ANY other instructors or companies in the state!
Instructor Mallory will teach, guide, and assist you with the application process and answer all of your questions during this special class event!
NOTE:
For those who live above Westchester County, New York: If you already have a pistol license and live above Westchester County, you need to take the 18-hour course if you have a premise license and want to upgrade to a concealed carry license. If you have a sportsman restriction, you do NOT need the course to have that restriction removed. You also do NOT need to take the 18-hour training to re-certify your pistol license every three years with the state. Additionally, those who live above Westchester County do NOT need to renew their license with their county, as it never expires.
If you are applying for a new pistol license anywhere in NY State and want to carry outside of your property, the 18-hour course is required to obtain an initial license after September 1, 2022. Those who live in Westchester County or down through NYC or Long Island and have a pistol license will need to take the course every three years to keep their license current.
The full 18-hour course includes the following components:
- All required class curriculum mandated by NY State law.
- A 50-question written test with a score of at least 80% to pass.
- The Live-Fire Proficiency Assessment, administered from a distance of 12′, shooting five rounds of ammo with four of those shots landing in the 25.5″ x 11″ target area. Targets will be provided.
Important Notes:
- Attendance at this class does not guarantee your NY CCW permit. You must still apply to the licensing agency and be approved by that authority. We will guide you through this process and be available for questions.
Required Equipment:
Please bring a pistol (22 caliber to 45 caliber), approximately 50 rounds of ammunition, an outside-the-waistband (OWB) Kydex holster, eye protection, and ear protection. These items can also be rented from our range for use in the class.
Prerequisites:
There are no required prerequisite classes or permits, but you must be 21 years of age.
Citizenship & Convictions:
You must be a LEGAL United States citizen to attend this course. Past convictions might not bar you from obtaining your pistol license. However, if you have a felony or domestic violence conviction, are a drug user, a fugitive from justice, or have a DWI conviction within the past five years, or would otherwise be prohibited from accessing a handgun, you will not be allowed to attend or apply.
